To be any layer of the Jay Peak Ski and Ride School you will be expected to provide outstanding customer service and have a positive attitude around guests and co-workers. If you bring your passion for skiing and snowboarding to Jay Peak we will guarantee you have a great winter. All instructors are responsible to teach beginner to intermediate lessons to anyone of any age.
The Instructor team at Jay Peak is divided up into three layers based on commitment level.
Brand new this season, the Ski & Ride School is hiring 14-17 year olds into their Jr Instructor Program. This is a great way to get involved with the school at an early age. The Jr. Instructors help instructors teach lessons, help with other school related tasks. They work on a limited basis, mostly on our “busy days” and along with their pay, they receive a Season Pass for Jay and Burke. If you can: ski or ride green and blue terrain comfortably, commit availability of at least 12 days, and have a true passion for the sport you could be a great addition to the Jay Peak Jr Instructor Program.
Must be available for at least 12 days of the season.
Fresh Powder Instructor
Energy goes up and new possibilities emerge when fresh snow is in the trees, the Powder Staff’s experience is just the same; adding energy and possibilities to the whole team. This layer is for those who cannot commit to 23 days in a season, yet have multiple years of experience. These instructors teach or conduct training on a limited basis, especially on our “busy days”. Along with competitive pay, they receive a day ticket for any scheduled day of work and an additional Jay Peak day ticket voucher. If you can: ski or ride black terrain comfortably, commit availability of at least 12 days, and have a true passion for the sport you could be a great addition to the Jay Peak Fresh Powder team.
Must be available for at least 12 days of the season.
Like the understory of a tree run, these 60-75 instructors aren’t always there, but when they are they tighten everything up and add the perfect layer. We rely on the understory staff to teach during our busiest times – weekends, holidays and days with large groups. The understory instructor has a small amount of time commitment but enjoys all the same benefits; a season pass that is valid at Jay Peak and Burke Mountain, employee perks, and competitive pay when teaching. With the training clinics throughout the season open to understory instructors, this is a great way to improve upon personal skiing and riding, as well as learn the nuances of the mountain.
Must be able to ski/ride green terrain comfortably.
The structure and feel of the forest lies within the canopy trees. They create the essence of the tree run. Being one of the 25-35 canopy instructors at Jay is unlike teaching anywhere else. We have all new: progression terrain; beginner lifts; learning center; cutting edge progression; and partnerships with Burton, Disney, and Elan & Rossignol. Members of the canopy staff will have to commit to an availability of at least 66 days this season including 17 "Yellow" days and at least 3 "Green" days. They will receive a season pass that is valid at Jay Peak and Burke Mountain, employee perks, and competitive pay when teaching.
Must be available for at least 66 days of the season.
The emergent layer of the forest is made up of those few trees that reach above the canopy and risk the high winds and heavy rain and snow to get the benefits of full sun. These large forest trees serve as way points along the tree run. The emergent layer of the Ski and Ride School are much like these trees. This group of 9 has proven itself to the mission of the school and is held to the highest of expectations. However, they get the benefit of being paid the whole time they are at work. This layer will always be expected to be working and improving the guest experience resort-wide or participating in training clinics. Besides training often and traversing the resort looking for guests to help out, when there is a backup in the rental shop, the emergent layer goes in, if there is a long line to get tickets, the emergent instructors help guests understand what products they need and what their next steps will be. From their vantage point above the canopy, the emergent instructors can see where they are needed most.
Must be available for at least 66 days of the season.
The Lorax Layer
The Lorax speaks for the trees. This key group of people are the leads and supervisors that keep the department functioning. This layer has the most responsibility yet the most reward. This layer works behind the lessons and makes sure the other layers all have what they need in order to offer the best possible experiences to the guests. They are expected to also do whatever is needed of them, whether it’s creating a training program, entering lesson data, or teaching a beginner lesson, the Lorax layer is there for the success of the department.
Must be available for at least 100 days of the season.
Levels of Pay for all Instructor Staff:
Based on experience, each instructor is assigned to a Shred Level from 1-9. The level is associated with a pay rate and a scheduling group. Each instructor receives three pay rates: a teaching rate, a non-teaching rate (75% of their teaching rate or minimum wage) and a request private rate (double their teaching rate).
Teaching pay rates for Shred Levels 1-9 range from $9.00/hr to $17.89/hr.
Interested candidates should submit a completed application and/or resume to Human Resources, 830 Jay Peak Rd, Jay, VT 05859, or firstname.lastname@example.org.
