SPRING SKIING, RIDING & EVENTS

Battle For Burlington and Spring Skiing With Winter-like Conditions at Jay Peak

JAY, Vt. (March 4, 2008) – If Jay Peak’s Buddy Loux, the famous face of the resort’s Buddy Club, knew that spring skiing this season was going to be blessed with knee-deep snow, perhaps he would have thought twice about trading in snow for sand this year. While the entrepreneur successfully continues to run his new dive shop in St. Maarten, his counterparts will be enjoying one of the best spring skiing and riding seasons in recent years. At press time, the resort had received more than two feet of snow in the past week alone, bringing season snow totals to more than 330-plus inches to date, with more snow still in the forecast for March.

“We’ve more than doubled business levels from last season, and it clearly has been one of the most steady snow seasons in many years,” said Steve Wright, vice president of marketing and sales. “With the base depths at two to three feet, plows are struggling to figure out where to put all the snow. We’ll clearly have the best of both worlds late March and in April.”

The highlight of spring events at Jay is the Beach Party Weekend and Battle for Burlington March 29. The Beach Party is the biggest apres-ski party of the year, with loads of giveaways, barbecues and activities for all ages. In the afternoon, the Battle for Burlington pits the best student skiers and riders against each other from University of Vermont, St. Michael’s College and Champlain College – all vying for the coveted title in this second annual slopestyle event in the Harmony Terrain Park. Only 10 skiers and 10 riders are invited to participate in the event so it draws the cream of the crop from Vermont’s largest city. The event runs from 1-4 p.m. and is free for spectators.

The season winds down with the resort’s annual pond skimming event April 19 at 11:30 a.m. at the Tram Base Area. Prizes will be awarded in several categories, including a 2008-2009 Jay Peak Season Pass for the most creative costume.

“This is what we call good clean, and icy cold, fun,” said Wright. “The event is free for anyone with enough nerve to participate, plus we’ll have a springtime barbecue, music with DJ Frack and some colorful commentary. It’s a fun way to cap off a fantastic season.”

Starting April 2, packages are available in Hotel Jay from $99/person/night and include 1-night lodging and 1-day skiing/riding plus breakfast and dinner in the hotel; free lodging and lift tickets for kids 14 and under; free meals, lodging and lift tickets for kids ages 6 and under; and free daycare for kids ages 2-7.
