***Please note that Big Jay is currently OPEN.***
The Big Jay and Black Falls tracts of the Jay State Forest were conserved by the Green Mountain Club and the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation with the assistance of the Vermont Housing and Conservation Board and others. The high-elevation forest is a special natural community and is home to the rare Bicknell's thrush.
ILLEGAL CUTTING HAS SEVERELY DAMAGED THE FOREST AND WILDLIFE HABITAT.
Cutting whips and saplings has caused a loss of understory trees. When the larger overstory trees die, there are no young trees to take their place, and eventually openings fragment the forest. NO CUTTING OF TRAILS, TREES, DOWNED TREES, OR OTHER VEGETATION IS PERMITTED. VIOLATORS WILL BE PROSECUTED.
